The first book from contemporary rug hooker Meryl Cook. This book documents the seven healing mats that Meryl designed and hooked as a way of processing her experience of healing. The book is filled with practical, powerful tips for readers to begin their own creative, healing journey.
Following a diagnosis of breast cancer, Meryl Cook turned her wake up call into wellness through her rug hooking. With each stage of her recovery, she gained increased awareness of herself and through her rugs, discovered a unique design method, along with a new way of thinking, and a new way of being.
Meryl had been a homeopath and Bowen therapist for 20 years, but it wasn’t until she faced her own health crisis that she understood at a bone deep level what it truly takes to heal. One Loop at a Time, a story of rug hooking, healing and creativity follows Meryl’s journey as she wrote and hooked her way to wellness. The book is filled with practical tips that readers can use to begin their healing journey, as well as beautiful photographs of each of her healing mats.
Explaining the meaning behind each rug, Meryl takes you on her journey, showing how tapping into her creativity and Chakra colour theory led her to healing and finding her authentic self.

Here’s what people are saying about One Loop at a Time:
“What Meryl lays out in this book is a powerful creative journey that anyone can take. The only gear required to take this journey is the courage to just. let. go. As Meryl describes, this transformative journey takes us deep into ourselves to understand who we are, what we were put on this earth to do, and what we need to release in order to heal not only our bodies, but our souls. … My own healing journey path was often lonely and bewildering. How I wish I had had this book as a guide.”

“Got mine. Thankyou so much…. Great book…… amazing story. Well done” L.G.
“Just received my book. Wonderful, so inspirational! Thank you for taking time to write a sweet message in it!” B.H.
“Happy holidays dear Meryl. I enjoyed your book, and am starting a healing mat.” M.B.
“Love the book …a must read for all creative women.” J.J.
“Your book looks wonderful and I tucked it away to savour with a cup of tea in the quiet after the holidays! I will let you know when I get a moment to enjoy it as it deserves! Blessings to you and yours! It looks special!” C.L.
“I just finished reading and re-reading One Loop at a Time – I am full of emotions and such pride and admiration of you and for you. What a wonderful gift you’ve given to each of us as you share not only the message of your mat, but from where your design was born; how/why you chose the colours -the shapes and the beautiful descriptive writings that accompany each mat. I still feel tingly all over and knew I had to sit right down and convey all of my thoughts (albeit a tad jumbled) and feelings to you right away.
I shed some tears – both for your pain and the beauty of what has emerged from you as you heal; I feel motivated to try pushing myself out of the box and try new designs and be more free with my hooking but most of all to LISTEN to me more…make that time!! … You know I’ve always admired your work Meryl but these mats are soooooo beautiful – full of motion and LIFE – I love each and every one of them and can’t choose a favourite!!
Well my friend I must close off, but just wanted you to know how much I admire you as an artist, a writer and a FRIEND!! I so hope that the roads are clear on January 11 as I would be honoured to attend your book launch and get to deliver in person a BIG hug and say BRAVO for a wonderfully written, inspirational and creative book for all to read.” LK
“Since writing and rug-hooking are two of my favourite things, of course I was excited to read Meryl Cook’s new book. So we did a book exchange! Meryl offers her insights on healing from a breast cancer diagnosis through her journey of writing and hooking to express her reflections by creating healing mats. I enjoyed her rugs, her process, her poetry and her search for positive change. And I love the idea of writing healing words on the linen. Hers is a story of resilience and recovery, beautifully shared in her unique journal to wellness.” Lila Hope-Simpson, author of Stepping Out from Three Dogs Press.
“I am sitting here by the wood stove feeling cozy and enjoying your book. Thank you for being brave enough to open to your whole self and for sharing it with us… inspiring us with your whole beauty full self and your trust in your healing and your trust in healing.” MM
“When I got home last night, I opened your book thinking I would read a page or two before moving on to things that had to be done – your Mom is so right – housework will always be there! Well, to say I was hooked would be an understatement. I couldn’t put your book down until I had literally read it from cover to cover. Then I went back and re-read a couple of pages again – I’ve read “My 10 Commandments for Healing” several times and have the page marked for quick reference, as I hope to make it my mantra for 2017 and beyond. I was so awed by your book and your words Meryl. I delighted in how you took something so terrifying and made it into a beautiful and creative self-discovery, and was inspired by how you shared your journey in such a lovely heartfelt way. I can see where this book will be read and re-read many many times.” CE
