Whether it is a New Year’s resolution, or just a resolve to quit smoking, congratulations on taking the first step to quit smoking by making the decision. There are many articles written about how to support yourself while quitting smoking – eat healthy, drink plenty of fluids, exercise, get proper rest, form a quitting smoking team of friends and change the habitual patterns which reinforce your smoking habit.
The purpose of this article is to tell you about a trio of homeopathic cell salts that can support your body as you go through the process of quitting and withdrawal. They can be used in conjunction with all of the suggestions above and are safe and non-toxic (i.e. will not interact with any of your current medications or supplements).
About Cell Salts
Dr. W.H. Schussler studied the chemical constituents of human cells.
He identified 12 inorganic mineral salts – Calcium fluoride, Calcium phosphate, Calcium sulphate, Ferrum phosphate, Potassium chloride, Potassium phosphate, Potassium sulphate, Magnesium phosphate, Sodium chloride, Sodium phosphate, Sodium sulphate and Silica.
Dr. Schussler believed that when the levels of these inorganic mineral salts in the cells is disturbed, symptoms leading to disease develop. He felt that health could be restored by offering the body minute doses of the salt that is lacking.
Cell salts are prepared according to homeopathic pharmaceutical principles in very small doses (usually 6X and 12X potency). (For further information about the history of Cell salts and clear descriptions of indications for each Cell salt, refer to Miranda Castro’s article Gentle Little Souls: Everyday Uses for the Humble Cell Salt)
With the recent controversy about several of the conventional medications used to help people to stop smoking, there has been an upsurge in interest among the general public for safe yet effective supports for quitting smoking.
Individual response to quitting smoking varies from person to person. There are three of the Cell salts that can be particularly helpful for the side effects of quitting smoking. These are Natrum phosphoricum, Kali phosphoricum and Natrum muriaticum.
Natrum phosphoricum acts primarily on the stomach and the intestines, and can help with the digestive complaints that can accompany nicotine withdrawal.
Kali phosporicum is helpful for the jittery nerves, irritability and short temper that some experience.
Natrum muriaticum acts on the mucous membranes and the skin and can help to remove toxins from your body.
How to take Cell Salts
Cell salts should be dissolved in the mouth at least 5 minutes away from eating or drinking. After about 1 minute the tablets can be chewed if not fully dissolved. For quitting smoking, the simplest method of taking them would be to take one of each of the cell salts (Nat phos, Kali phos and Nat mur) 3 to 4 times a day for up to 28 days.
Not everyone has the same withdrawal symptoms, so if this combination does not work for you consult your professional homeopath.
