Spring is the season of cleansing and cleaning. We want to throw off the sluggishness of winter, open the windows, air out the mats and cleanse our bodies.
In the spring, we transition from a heavy reliance on root veggies, soups and stews to lightly steamed or stir fried spring greens such as dandelion greens. Spring is an excellent time to take a look at our dietary habits, and work towards including more fresh food (fruits and vegetables), less caffeine, leaner protein, more good fats (such as olive oil, avocados) and plenty of water.
In terms of our health, spring is a helpful time to cleanse and tune up the body. The Bowen Technique is a good way to assist with cleansing and tuning up the body, as it helps the body to detoxify and restore balance on a physical level.
The Bowen Technique is a gentle, non-invasive form of body work that has a systemic effect on the body. The systems that are affected by a Bowen treatment include the circulatory, lymphatic, digestive and nervous systems, as well as the musculo-skeletal system. Because of its effect on the circulatory, lymphatic and digestive systems, Bowen can act like a gentle detox for the body.
A Bowen treatment consists of gentle, rolling movements done with the practitioner’s hands on specific points of the body. These moves are light and can be done through clothing. They stimulate a systemic response so powerful that a pause is observed between each series of moves to allow the body to integrate this information.
A pattern of movements and pauses continues throughout the treatment. During each pause the practitioner observes the reaction of the patient’s body, continuing only once the body has had the chance to integrate the last series of movements. In this way also the treatment is gentle, in that each session is geared towards the individual body, reducing the likelihood of over-treatment. The effects of the treatment continue to unfold over the next 4 to 5 days.
As well as improvements in sleep, pain or discomfort levels and digestion, many patients report improvements in energy and emotional well being after Bowen. Consider scheduling a series of 3 Bowen treatments at each change of season, but particularly in the spring and in the fall. Combine these treatments with eating more spring greens and lighter meals and increasing your outdoor activity. Your body will thank you for it.
